QLD:Man in coma after Gold Coast house fire
A 47-year-old man is in an induced coma with severe burns after trying to fight an
early morning fire that destroyed his Gold Coast home.
Police believe the fire started in a bedroom of the Coombabah house and may have been
caused by an electric blanket.
Detective Senior Sergeant CHRIS TOOHEY says police arrived to find the man trying to
hose down the flames.
He's in hospital with severe burns to the upper part of his body.

Sandakan survivor silent to the end
* Governor-General Quentin Bryce will represent Australia at the 65th anniversary of
the Sandakan Death Marches in East Malaysia from this Saturday to next Monday. She will
join more than 100 Australians, including former Sandakan POWs Russ Ewin and Lesley Bunny
Glover, at a memorial ceremony at Sandakan Memorial Park this Sunday.
** Queenslander Owen Campbell was the last survivor of the infamous Sandakan death
marches, one of the darkest episodes of World War Two. Taken prisoner by the Japanese
after the fall of Singapore in 1942, Mr Campbell was transferred to Sandakan, Borneo,
the following year. He and the other prisoners endured forced labour, beatings, torture,
a starvation diet and illness. In 1945 two groups of about 500 of the fittest prisoners
were marched out of the camp to Ranau. Men soon began dying of disease and exhaustion.
Some were murdered. About six days into the march, when allied aircraft strafed his group,
Mr Campbell and four comrades escaped into the jungle. One died during the escape and
three others were killed after reaching the coast. Mr Campbell, sick and near death, was
saved by a local guerrilla leader who fed and hid him from the Japanese until he could
be taken through enemy lines and be rescued. He died in 2003 aged 87. Three years earlier,
on January 26, 2000, he was awarded an Order of Australia medal. The following article
is based on an interview he gave on that occasion to AAP Senior Correspondent Doug Conway.
**
By Doug Conway
SYDNEY, Aug 12 AAP - Not even an Australia Day honour will coax 84-year-old Owen Campbell
to talk about the atrocities he and 2,400 other prisoners of war suffered in North Borneo
in 1945.
"I won't be in it," said Mr Campbell, the last man alive of the five who managed to
escape, thanks to the native jungle dwellers who scorned Japanese reward money and death
threats to harbour them.
"They've asked me to do a book but I say nothing doing. Never. Just let sleeping dogs lie.
"They (the victims) still have relatives and family alive. It would just upset them,
to think about what their loved ones suffered on that march."
Mr Campbell won't even record the details on archival tape for public release generations hence.
He occasionally talks about the war in general terms to his family - his wife of 59
years, Evelyn, five children, 14 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
"But I don't tell them anything about the atrocities," he said from his Beachmere home,
north of Brisbane.
He does, however, believe that authorities should keep alive the Sandakan story, which
RSL official Bruce Ruxton has called the greatest tragedy ever encountered by the Australian
Army and "the worst brutality meted out to any POWs this century, outside of concentration
camps".
"It's getting known more in schools now," Mr Campbell said.
"And the people of Sandakan will keep it alive. They're well up on it."
Mr Campbell holds no grudges against the younger generations of Japanese.
"They weren't even alive at the time," he said. "But the old blokes I'll never forget or forgive.
"I still have nightmares - a few bad ones. They're getting less and less. But you never forget."
Mr Campbell has been back to Sandakan five times but there won't be a sixth return visit.
"I'm not going any more. I said my goodbyes last time. I'm too old in the tooth to
be fluttering about."
He described his own survival as a miracle, made possible by determination - "I decided
they weren't going to beat me" - and the thought of his family back at home.
"The bloke upstairs helped a lot, too, no two ways about that. Somebody is definitely
ruling the roost."
Mr Campbell said a sense of humour was normally a prerequisite for POWs but it made
no difference at Sandakan.
"There was no humour on the march," he said.
"Everyone was sick. It was just too serious."

QLD: Marine deaths spark pollution concerns
BRISBANE, Aug 23 AAP - A peak wildlife body is hoping tests on four sick turtles will
provide answers as to why three bottlenose dolphins and a turtle died in southeast Queensland's
Moreton Bay.
On three consecutive days last week dead marine animals were found in the bay.
An adult dolphin carcass washed up at Victoria Point, that of a small adult was found
at Ormiston and a calf was found dead at the Port of Brisbane.
On Sunday, four turtles were found in "seriously poor shape" and another was dead.
Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland president Simon Baltais says Moreton Bay
has had a recent outbreak of algae blooms and there are concerns stormwater drains may
be poisoning the water.
"We don't have any proof, but a sudden spike in dead and very sick animals in large
numbers in a very short space of time means something is going wrong," Mr Baltais told
AAP on Sunday.
"Tests on the four live ones (turtles) may tell us what is happening."
While some people have pointed the finger at an oil and container spill that released
62 tonnes of fertiliser into the bay earlier this year, Mr Baltais says he believes the
dolphin deaths are indicative of a much wider problem.
"There is a worry out there that things are going backwards. We are seeing mangroves
die off, more seagrass damage, blue-green algal blooms and now we have dolphin deaths.
Things aren't looking real good," Mr Baltais said.
The cargo ship Pacific Adventurer spilled more than 200,000 litres of oil and lost
31 containers of ammonium nitrate overboard in the bay in March.
"If you look at modelling for the oil spill and those containers, most of it has diluted
fairly quickly.
"I think what we are seeking are the symptoms of a bigger problem, which is the degradation
of Moreton Bay because of population growth."
He said the government needed to invest in reducing stormwater runoff into the bay,
which was worsening as the southeast population grew.

Australian Constructors Association president WAL KING .. who's also the chief executive

The meeting between Mr KING and Mr RUDD comes ahead of today's release of an ACA report

industry suffers a 10 per cent decline in productivity.
While the report doesn't show winding back industrial relations reforms would lead
to a drop in productivity .. Mr KING says there's been a huge improvement in the industry
since the introduction of Work Choices.
Mr RUDD says Labor will abolish Australian Workplace Agreements if it wins government.
The party's transitional arrangements for abolishing AWAs are expected to be released soon.
Mr RUDD hasn't denied the party's considering a plan to allow workers earning more
than 100 thousand dollars a year to sign individual common law contracts that are exempt

WA: Brian Burke's incredible influence exposed

WA: Brian Burke's incredible influence exposed
By Adam Gartrell
PERTH, Dec 7 AAP - Blackmail and intimidation, secret phone calls, hidden agendas and
shady dealings between politicians, public servants and private powerbrokers.
It sounds like the world of intrigue described in All The King's Men, the classic novel
about US politics in the thoroughly corrupt 1930s.
But it seems the description applies equally to Western Australia in 2006, where the
central character is not a wily southern governor but Brian Burke, the Machiavellian former
premier turned powerful political lobbyist.
Burke, who was jailed in 1994 for rorting travel expenses, was pushed back into the
headlines in October when it first emerged he would be called to give evidence at a Corruption
and Crime Commission (CCC) inquiry.
The CCC was investigating allegations of misconduct by Canal Rocks and its proponents,
a company which wants to build a $330 million beachside tourism development in the state's
south west.
It was initially thought Burke, who worked as a lobbyist for Canal Rocks for several
years, would be only a peripheral figure in the inquiry.
But it quickly became clear Burke was in fact central to the investigation: over the
following weeks, the CCC shone a light into the dark corners of his lobbying activities
and his reputation has been shredded by the exposure.
The evidence has painted Burke as an incredibly well-connected and conniving puppet
master, prepared to use all manner of underhand tactics to further his clients' interests,
and blackmail and threaten anyone who who stood in his way.
First, the inquiry was told it was Burke who arranged to use a dormant lobby group
as a "conduit" for campaign funds from Canal Rocks to pro-development - or at least malleable
- local government candidates in the area.
The evidence gradually piled up of Burke's remarkably widespread influence over senior
bureaucrats and other public servants, councillors and council candidates.
Then came the explosive evidence which emerged during the testimony last month of then-Small
Business Minister Norm Marlborough.
Burke's long-time friend, Marlborough was called to testify after it emerged he had
received an undisclosed $5,000 election donation from the director of Canal Rocks.
But the CCC wanted to talk to him about something else: namely the "special phone"
he bought to privately communicate with Burke.
As revealed in a series of tapped phone recordings, Marlborough took instructions from
Burke about how to respond to parliamentary questioning and agreed to appoint Burke's
choice to a government board.
The calls confirmed the state opposition's long-held belief that Marlborough was Burke's
"mouthpiece" in government.
The revelations forced Marlborough out of parliament and Burke out of the ALP.
They also sparked a witch-hunt: Accusations abounded about Burke's influence over other
MPs and public servants.
WA Premier Alan Carpenter added to the furore, declaring Burke had "friends everywhere".
This week, during further CCC hearings, more evidence emerged of Burke's power and influence.
Upper house MP Adele Farina told the CCC how Burke had approached her to help him push
Canal Rocks' interests.
But instead of becoming another Burke lackey, Farina says she stood up to the powerful
"bully", and subsequently fell victim to his wrath.
When she was preparing to seek re-endorsement for her seat for the 2004 election, Farina
says Mr Burke told her in no uncertain terms her "pre-selection was at risk".
Burke told her he and his powerful right faction, instrumental in getting her pre-selected
in 2001, no longer supported her.
The only way to win back that support, he told her, was to be "more helpful".
If it were not for a one-off deal between then-premier Geoff Gallop and the ALP National
Executive, Farina believes Burke's influence would almost certainly have seen her ousted.
Farina says Burke also pressured her into withdrawing her nomination for a parliamentary
secretary position because he wanted somebody else.
Farina's evidence demonstrated there were limits to Burke's influence, and not everyone
was prepared to do his bidding.
But it also showed he was prepared to punish those he was unable to influence.
Burke himself has denied any wrongdoing.
He reappeared this week and skilfully "clarified" his previous evidence without once
admitting culpability in anything inappropriate.
He was even so bold as to attack the CCC, saying his business had collapsed and long-term
friends now shunned him as a result of its investigation.
The political outlook of his children, particularly his ambitious daughter Sarah Burke,
had also been damaged by the evidence, he declared.
"It may be, sir, that these penalties are justified by what has been led (led) in evidence
at this commission, but I don't think they are," he said.
As counsel assisting the inquiry Stephen Hall said in his closing address, a number
of people questioned by the CCC had displayed "idiosyncratic" standards of what is appropriate,
standards markedly at odds with the general public.
Their refusal to accept that misconduct had occurred was at least self-serving and
"at worst a cynical attempt to deny what is abundantly clear on any fair assessment of
the evidence", he said.
"Where lobbying extends beyond the presentation of a client's position and is accompanied
by requests for favours, the seeking of special treatment or, in the worst case, by threats
of adverse consequences for the decision-maker unless they comply with the lobbyists demands
it crosses a clear line," Mr Hall said.
"Conduct of this type leads inexorably to misconduct of the most serious type."
The Canal Rocks inquiry is now over, but the CCC has announced it will now investigate
broader misconduct by public officials, with more public hearings to come next year.
Burke will undoubtedly be a central figure in that inquiry as well while more disturbing
details of behind-the-scenes influence seem sure to emerge.
After the past six weeks however, it can now reasonably be assumed that influence is
finally over.

NSW: Final march for 36th Battalion
By Adam Gartrell
SYDNEY, April 25 AAP - As the Australian 36th Battalion sailed towards New Guinea in
May 1942, 18-year-old infantryman Stan Waugh imagined he was bound for a tropical paradise.
"I was very naive," Mr Waugh said today before taking part in the Anzac Day march in Sydney.
"What we got was altogether different. When we were approaching Port Moresby I was
expecting Hawaii, with beautiful hula girls on the beach.
"There were no hula girls."
Instead, armed with only a rifle and six weeks basic training, Mr Waugh's platoon was
plunged into a long and costly jungle war from which many men did not return.
They played a vital role in the Kokoda campaign and in the savage battles fought in
Northern Papua.
This morning, Mr Waugh and about 25 members of the 36th Battalion gathered for their
final Anzac Day march together.
Mr Waugh, who lives in Melbourne, said he and his fellow soldiers shared an "unshakeable
bond" that would not end with their final march.
"Being infantrymen, you depended on every other man there to get you through," he said.
"It wasn't all grim - you had to see the funny side of things, and we also had a lot
of good times.
"In fact, you tend to forget all the bad stuff and focus on the good times, which is nice."
Keith Irwin, president of the 36th Battalion Association, agreed with Mr Waugh and
said he wouldn't be marching next year.
"We're just getting too old," he said.
"There are 135 of us still alive, but I'd say there would be no one without some sort
of medical problem, some minor, some major," he said.
"It's getting too much. You just cannot turn back the clock."
Despite the association's decision not to march as a group next year, many of the 36th
say they will be back.
Bill Leeman, 81, from Tweed Heads, has only missed the Sydney march once and said "as
long as I'm able I'll keep coming."
"God willing I'll be here next year," Mr Leeman said.

Qld: Smoking bans won't affect businesses, supporters say
By Rosemary Desmond
BRISBANE, Dec 29 AAP - Unions and health organisations today rejected tobacco industry
claims that new smoking bans to come into force on Saturday will devastate Queensland's
hospitality industry.
Imperial Tobacco (Australia) managing director Peter Richards said more than 2,000
businesses in the state would be affected by the new laws, triggering widespread revenue
losses and job shedding.
"There is no evidence that these bans will reduce the number of smokers, and yet experience
shows it will place an extreme cost burden on those operating pubs and clubs, many of
which are small businesses," Mr Richards said.
From January 1, smoking will be outlawed in Queensland on patrolled beaches, within
10 metres of children's playgrounds, at sporting stadiums and within four metres of building
entrances.
At least one third of an enclosed area of a hotel or club has to be non-smoking and
one third of a poker machine area also has to be non-smoking.
Queensland Cancer Fund spokesman Nathan Scholtz said the bans already had wide support
from the general public and any job losses would be minimal.
"We disagree (that) there will be that number of businesses affected," Mr Scholtz said.
"The evidence hasn't shown that at all."
He said smoking was the largest single preventable cause of death and disease in Australia.
Bans introduced over a number of years in places such as hotel lobbies, banks and planes
had also encountered predictions of a consumer backlash which never eventuated, Mr Scholtz
said.
"Predictions of doom and gloom haven't come to pass and we don't think they will this
time either," he said.
"You can bring back jobs but you can't bring back lives."
The union which represents hospitality industry workers also said Imperial Tobacco's
predictions of job losses were exaggerated.
A spokeswoman for the Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Workers' Union (LHMU) said
people would adjust to the smoking bans, as they had in other countries.
"People will be a bit grumpy at the start but they will adjust to it," she said.
The LHMU had fully supported the bans and had been party to the government's consultations,
she said.
Full smoking bans at hotels and clubs will come into force from July 1, 2006.
A spokeswoman for Queensland Health Minister Gordon Nuttall said there was evidence
overseas that smokers still went to hotels and clubs despite not being able to smoke.
Almost 21 per cent of all Queenslanders aged over 14 smoke daily - more than the national
average of 19 per cent.

POWER SHOPPING.(women entrepreneurs as consumers)(Brief Article)
Women are doing it; new data indicates just how much.
When it comes to shopping for clothing, household items and cars, studies have shown women wield a tremendous amount of influence. But a December 1999 survey released by the National Foundation for Women Business Owners (NEWBO) has found that women entrepreneurs are just as dominant when making decisions about goods like telephone, cable and Internet service, as well as insurance policies.
In fact, 86 percent of women business owners use the same products at home that they purchase for their companies.
The power of women entrepreneurs as consumers has some important implications for corporate marketing to this group. "More corporations are starting to understand the impact" women entrepreneurs make on the marketplace, says Andrea Donaghy, director of marketing, individual insurance division of the Principal Financial Group. "But the difficulty is knowing how to retool processes that have worked for years. It's very difficult to know what to change to speak to this market."
NEWBO executive director Sharon Hadary hesitates to quantify how many companies get the difference, but she says more firms are becoming aware of the need. AT&T, IBM and Principal Financial Group have long recognized the economic clout women business owners hold. This knowledge has influenced both what and how they market to this group.
"When NFWBO started releasing their studies, everyone was surprised to see that [so many] women ran their own businesses and were buying their own products and services," says Donna Chancellor, corporate affairs director of AT&T. "It was a huge, untapped market."
About 10 years ago, AT&T began to re-educate its sales force, says Chancellor. The company didn't create new products; rather, it changed its selling approach to consider the distinctive way women make purchases. They don't make instant decisions, preferring instead to develop business relationships over time. And once they sign on, they're loyal customers.
IBM, on the other hand, set up its Women Business Owner Segment to specifically address the needs of women entrepreneurs in the global marketplace. "Many businesses have awakened to the realization that a fourth to a third of businesses worldwide are owned by women, says Leslie Jaap, segment executive in IBM's global small business division.
This study, which Hadary says initially began as a look at the difference between women business owners and working women, has inspired more and more corporations to ask, "What do entrepreneurial women want?"
Of course, who's better qualified to answer that burning question than you? Belonging to an officially "hot market" puts you in a unique position to demand what you want from the corporations you patronize. You should either network with organizations that have connections to these corporations or contact the companies directly. Here are a few starting points:
IBM's Small Business Advisory Council allows entrepreneurs to offer input on emerging technology.
Principal Life doesn't have "a formal process for feedback, but I would love to have women provide [some]," says Donaghy.
AT&T has a Web site (www.att.com/wib) which, in addition to providing information about the company's products, allows women to network with one another and send the company information on what they need and want.

Causticization process for refining alumina.
Alcoa World Alumina says it has developed an efficient causticization process for use in refining alumina.
A research team at Alcoa's Kwinana works in Western Australia developed the process, which is said to improve productivity at a refinery by reducing the amount of carbonate in the Bayer circuit liquor. Other benefits claimed are improved lime efficiency and a decrease of alkalinity in mud residue.
The company estimates that applying this process to its refineries worldwide will increase production by 500 000 tonnes a year. Full commercial trials are being planned at the company's refineries in Kwinana and Point Comfort, Texas, USA. Alcoa has already started engineering a retrofit at its Pinjarra refinery in Western Australia, which will result in an expansion of the capacity by 165 000 tonnes a year by early 2001.
All other Alcoa refineries are expected to be ready by late 2001.
Alcoa World Alumina, based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is the commercial centre of Alcoa's global bauxite and alumina activities.

C-suite recognizes necessity of having CCOs at their table.(ON THE BEAT: Corporate)
At the start of the year, Bill Wohl, former VP of PR at software firm SAP, joined HewlettPackard to assume the newly created role of chief communications officer, taking a seat at the C-suite table and reporting directly to CEO Leo Apotheker--a first for the IT giant.
"You can't be a true counselor to the business if you don't have the seat at the table and aren't directly counseling the top executives," says Wohl.
In 2010, HP went through a number of crises, including the resignation of former CEO Mark Hurd amidst allegations of sexual harassment and falsified expenses, as well as deep budget cuts. At that time, the head communications function was under marketing and fell under the direction of the company's chief technology officer. Wohl was installed in the new CCO role three months after Apotheker was hired. Both were former colleagues at SAP.
"Apotheker figured out that communications had to be lifted up," he adds. "His decision was a combination of factors: 'I want someone I trust in the job, who is experienced enough to help lift up the organization, who knows me enough as an executive, and who can hit the ground running.'"
Proactivity pays off
Over the last five years, the head of communications post has truly evolved into a more proactive role, one that, more often than not, takes a seat at the C-level table. Gone are the days of reactive press releases and media clips.
Nearly 50% of CCOs report to CEOs today, up from about four out of10 three years ago, says Leslie Gaines-Ross, chief reputation strategist at Weber Shandwick.
"They are more of a business partner with the CEO than they were a few years ago," she says. "It's much more about creating value for the company and reducing any risk it is under. CCOs must be seasoned and have crisis management experience under their belts today. I've heard many CCOs say that every day there's a battle for defending their company's reputation."
Instead of primarily implementing how news is delivered, HP's Wohl says he can now bring to the head table the outside world's perspective, those most influenced, such as the press, industry analysts, bloggers, and customers.
"When a company makes a decision, it wants to understand how it will be perceived, read, and consumed by the external and internal worlds," he says. "If communications is not at the table, you wind up in a very reactive position. We can say if that's the direction you're going, here's how the market is going to perceive that. If that's not the outcome you're looking for, then let's reconsider whether this is the right decision at the right time."
Tom Kowaleski, VP of corporate communications at BMW North America, agrees.
"When properly organized and structured, and the reporting relationship up through senior management is done properly, communications groups can be a voice of the outside world bringing in various perspectives and insights that stakeholder groups have of the company," says Kowaleski, who reports to BMW North America CEO Jim O'Donnell. "They can coalesce all that insight so there can be a harmony."
Maturing professional
While the Internet and social media have played a huge role in the evolution of a company's communications head, a maturing of the profession has also occurred, says Gaines-Ross.
"There's such a wide portfolio of stakeholders that companies have to deal with, so the threats or any opportunities can come from anywhere," she adds. "It's not just Wall Street anymore. He or she really must understand the business across the world and across all the business units, as well as have the same business acumen as his or her peers in the C-suite."
THE CCO's EVER-EVOLVING FUNCTION
The Rising CCO III study, conducted by Weber Shandwick and Spencer Stuart, found:
Crisis management as a critical skill set was considered nearly twice as important in 2010 (61%) as it was three years before (33%)
Forty-one percent of CCOs said social media/ blogging is a growing function of the job last year, up from 28% who said so in 2008

Google's New Analytics Tools For Tracking Social Media A Welcome Addition To SEO Arsenal.
Sydney, Australia (PRWEB) July 05, 2011
Excellent news for SEO analysts as Google launched Analytics and Webmaster tools to track the +1 button just a few days ago. In its efforts to rejoin the social networking community with Google+, the giant search engine provider has spared no expense in tracking its own results - granting webmasters access to their handy tools as well. CEO of SEO Partner, James Schramko, shares his thoughts:
"Every marketer out there should be tracking results. These new 'social analytics' tools provided by Google will grant us access to very specific data and invaluable information for split tests. Seeing how the crowd reacts to is vital for any marketer and Google has greatly simplified tracking actions that people take on our sites."
In their efforts to promote the use of the +1, Google presented solid data on the +1 button in a recent report, showing an increase in web traffic whenever someone hits the button. To track such data, Google came up with Social Plug-in Tracking which shows the average time users spend on the site, as well as the number of page views and bounce rates.
In addition to the social tracking tools, Google has added Audience and Activity reports. Audience reports provides demographic and geographic data of the users that have +1'd content on a site, while the activity reports track how many have clicked the +1 button.
The trial launch of Google+ a few days ago was a huge success and several reviews indicate that the new social platform may actually have what it takes to dethrone Facebook - the world's largest social media website to date. It is safe to speculate that Google's new Analytics are there to measure Google+'s performance in comparison to Facebook and Twitter, but they have other more practical uses as well, Schramko added.
"Link baiting for example, is a powerful SEO practice, which can bring in lots of organic traffic through social media which then gets shared using the social media buttons", said Schramko, "though of course you'll need some really interesting content to pull that off successfully, he continued. "The new analytics tools will show us the social impact of our content campaigns. If analytics keeps showing less than desirable results for your efforts, then it is best to have your SEO outsourced to professionals."

Dennis P. Goggin, 42, of 3614 S. Union Ave., Chicago, was arrested Thursday and charged with indecent solicitation of a child and attempted aggravated criminal sexual abuse, according to Elmhurst police.
Goggin, a new member of a South Side fire company, has been placed on administrative leave and an internal review will be conducted into the allegations, said Larry Langford, a Chicago Fire Department spokesman.

Goggin was arrested as part of an Internet crime investigation, Elmhurst police Sgt. Steve Weatherford said, adding that additional details were unavailable.
The charges against Goggin are felonies. It was unclear if he had hired an attorney.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution business press column.(Column)
Byline: Tom Walker
Feb. 20--HP SPYING CASE HURT HIGH-PROFILE FEMALE EXECS: No matter where they met or how tight the security, it seemed information from the meetings of Hewlett-Packard's directors and top executives always ended up on CNet or other news outlets.
Ultimately, efforts by that high-profile California computer products maker to find the source of the leaks and stop them led to wiretaps and illegal surveillance of the press and of Hewlett-Packard executives. Author/journalist James Stewart relates the story in The New Yorker (Feb. 19, 26).
Casualties of this corporate episode, which eventually led to federal and California criminal investigations, included Carly Fiorina, the country's most visible female CEO, and Chairwoman Patricia Dunn, who was charged with four felonies.
One covert practice used by HP was "pretexting," or lying to obtain reporters' phone numbers and other private information. It's also the story of cliquish behavior by old-line directors undermining newcomers, especially women.
After a wholesale turnover at the top, Stewart writes, "Hewlett-Packard is now thriving financially," and its new board gave current CEO Mark Hurd $8.6 million in cash bonus and options on 500,000 shares of stock.
PAY ISSUE FESTERS: No topic inflames the passions of business leaders and shareholders like executive pay, BusinessWeek (Feb. 26) reports. "Companies and compensation consultants argue that, in a free market, they'd be foolish not to pay the going rate for top talent. Investors demand that compensation be tied to performance and complain loudly when pay rises while share prices don't," the magazine says. At any rate, the perennial battle is about to reach a new level of contentiousness.
The proxy season, just getting started, will be the first under new Securities and Exchange Commission reporting rules that force companies to disclose more about executive pay than ever before -- from the hundreds of millions some executives stand to gain in severance, pensions and deferred pay to any perk worth more than $10,000.
"Golden parachutes and sybaritic benefits such as club memberships and personal use of company jets won't score many points against a backdrop of the options-backdating scandal and increasingly empowered activist investors," BusinessWeek says.
REINVENTING OUTDOOR ADS: An unexpected renaissance has occurred during the new-media Internet advertising era -- in the decidedly old-media outdoor advertising. "Spending in this segment of the industry approached $7 billion in 2006 and is on track to grow by 8 percent this year," Inc. (February) reports. At the same time, network TV, radio and newspaper advertising are expected to remain flat. Some outdoor ads can be uncommonly clever, such as New York City's manhole covers that were repainted to look like the tops of steaming cups of Folger's coffee. The only problem, according to the New York Post, is the "unjava-like aroma" of the street-level covers.
MISPLACED PRIORITIES: Considering how important a company's reputation is with the public, it's surprising how badly most companies manage their reputations, Harvard Business Review (February) reports. "Companies with strong positive reputations attract better talent and are perceived as providing more value in their products and services, which often allows them to charge a premium [for their products or services]." Their stock price also is relatively higher.
"Most companies, however, do an inadequate job of managing their reputations in general and the risks to their reputations in particular," HBR reports. They tend to focus on threats that have already occurred, rather than anticipating risks for the future.
That's not risk management, HBR says, it's crisis management -- a reactive approach aimed at limiting already existing damage.
REDOING THE OFFICE: Modern office design can be summed up in two words: cubicle and foosball, Fortune (Feb. 26) says. The former signifies "a soulless salaryman maze, the latter dot-com froth," and both concepts have taken their knocks.
"Thankfully, we're entering a new era where office design, a field once dismissed by serious architects, has become both a brand builder and a key piece of the worker productivity puzzle," the magazine says.

Motorola Canopy(TM) Platform Awarded PART-15.ORG's Manufacturer of the Year.
Motorola's Canopy(TM) Wireless Broadband group was awarded PART-15.ORG's Wireless Manufacturer of the Year Award during the WISPCON V conference, held earlier this month in suburban Chicago.
The award is bestowed for outstanding contributions to design, practice, techniques, or theory, as evidenced by publications, patents or equipment design in wireless control systems engineering, wireless sciences or technology. The Wireless Manufacturer of the Year Award is presented to a hardware or software manufacturer that has:
-- Demonstrated a commitment to the Wireless Internet Service Provider (WISP) community through the manufacturer's product lines; -- Delivered an exceptional technical support program; -- Enriched the WISP community through innovation of new technologies; -- Encouraged the WISP community for product enhancement; -- Maintained exceptional supply channels.
"It was just two years ago this month that Motorola's Canopy team announced the new product line at the very first WISPCON held in March 2002. It didn't take long for the wireless service providers to jump on this new and exciting technology," said Michael R. Anderson, chairman of PART-15.ORG. "Currently, Motorola's Canopy products are leading assets used by our industry in providing wireless broadband services to rural, suburban and inter-city areas."
Accepting the award for Motorola's Canopy Wireless Broadband group were Tony Kobrinetz, vice president and general manager, and Gary Schulz, chief engineer.
"We are flattered to be named Wireless Manufacturer of the Year by PART- 15.ORG since it is where our fixed wireless broadband roots were planted in 2002," said Schulz. "The Canopy platform has continued to grow in the independent service provider community, providing internet access solutions to people everywhere. This success has allowed us to extend our portfolio with additional Canopy solutions designed for traditional carriers and enterprise customers," said Schulz.
"We are in the midst of a wonderful evolution of wireless broadband. Technological advances, as well as an uptake in interest by the carrier and private network segments, are ensuring that the broadband of tomorrow will provide multiple service offerings, such as voice over Internet protocol, video, portability and eventually mobility," said Thomas Gruba, director of global marketing for Motorola's Canopy Wireless Broadband group.
