Qld: CMC launches public inquiry into Gold Coast council

A public inquiry will be held into allegations that Gold Coast City councillors misled
voters and failed to declare election gifts.

The Queensland Crime and Misconduct Commission has announced it will investigate the
council's behaviour during last year's elections.

The commission says it has received evidence described by chairman ROBERT NEEDHAM as interesting.

It's already investigating the Gold Coast City Council internally but has announced
it will broaden the inquiry into a public hearing, because the allegations have become
more serious.

Mr NEEDHAM says among the claims being investigated are the possible misleading of
voters, alleged breaches of the rules for disclosure of election gifts and possible failures
to declare personal interests.
